A nine-year-old boy was fatally stabbed in the back by a 12-year-old child on Monday while at a neighborhood playground in Kentwood, Michigan.
According to the Associated Press, the victim, Michael Conner Verkerke, died at a hospital shortly after the attack.
Investigators have said that several children were playing at the playground when one of them pulled out a knife and repeatedly stabbed Verkerke. The nine-year-old then ran hysterically to his house and collapsed on his front porch before the ambulance arrived.
The Detroit Free Press reported that after the stabbing, the 12-year-old attacker asked to use the phone of Glenn Stacey.
“I gave him my phone, and I heard him tell the 911 operator, ‘I just stabbed someone. Come and get me. I want to die.’ It was just a sad situation.”
Stacey said that during the phone call the assailant remained calm while talking to the dispatcher.
The Free Press also noted that the 12-year-old will be charged as an adult for the crime.
He pleaded not guilty to murder charges in court on Tuesday.
