Oscar Pistorius’ defense team had the chance to present their closing statements Friday, one day after the prosecution made their closing arguments.
According to The Week, defense attorney Barry Roux told the South African courtroom that the police completely mishandled the crime scene of Pistorius’ girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Roux said that investigators had “no respect” for the scene where the 29-year-old was killed.
The UK publication also reported that the judge in this case, Judge Thokozile Masipa, is expected to adjourn court for up to a month while she makes her final decision of the Paralympian’s fate. Court had just resumed Thursday after a month-long hiatus. The murder trial began in early March.
The prosecution has accused Pistorius of intentionally murdering Steenkamp after the two had a fight in the early morning hours of Valentine’s Day 2013. However, the sprint runner contests that he only shot the model after mistaking her for an intruder.
He has plead not guilty to murder and a weapons charge.
If convicted, he could face anywhere from 25 years to life in prison.
