Gloria Estefan will be the next musical icon to get her life turned into a Broadway show. Although the project was first announced back in May, producers confirmed today that the show will reach the Great White Way in October 2015.
As previously announced, the show, titled On Your Feet!, will be directed by Tony Winner Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots). The show is also a completely Estefan-approved project, with Estefan Enterprises, Inc. producing the show with James L. Nederlander and Bernie Yuman.
It is expected to be similar to other hit jukebox musicals and centers on the love story between Estefan and her husband, Emilio Estefan.
Before On Your Feet! hits Broadway, the show will debut in Chicago. According to Playbill, the Chicago run will begin on June 2, 2015 at the Oriental Theatre and will run through July 5, 2015.
The Broadway run begins at the Marquis Theatre on Oct. 5, 2015, with the official opening scheduled for Nov. 5.
The producers also announced an open casting call to find the right person to play the pop superstar behind such hits as “1-2-3,” “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You” and “Conga.” You can submit audition tapes to the show’s website and use the Twitter hashtag #ReachGloria. There will also be in-person auditions at Miami’s Knight Concert Hall of Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts on Sept. 21, 2014 and at Pearl Studios in New York City on Sept. 9.
“Finding the right performers to tell our story on the Broadway stage is the most important step in this project,” the singer said in a statement. “Our own journey together started in Miami, a city that has been such an inspiration to us both, and it only felt right that the city be a cornerstone of our search for the next generation of bright talent.”
