Guardians of the Galaxy and the space super heroes far surpassed weekend predictions, bringing in a $94 million opening.
The new Marvel masterpiece set a new record for August domestic openings, shattering the previously held record by The Born Ultimatum in 2007, which grossed $69.3 million opening weekend, according to The Washington Post and the L.A. Times.
Guardians features an unlikely squad of space traveling super heroes, starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, and Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot. According to Variety, the James Gunn directed picture is already set for a sequel in July 2017.
The closet hit's success brought Marvel movies' accumulative earnings to $6.3 billion since Iron Man's release in 2008, and made it the third biggest opening of the year, following Captain America: The Winter Soldier at $95 million, and Transformers: Age of Extinction at $100 million, according to Forbes.
