Guillermo del Toro and Hideo Kojima to make 'Silent Hills' game with Norman Reedus

By Benjamin Mazzara,

Konami, the Japanese game company behind the Silent Hill survival horror video game series, has revealed that a new game in the series, called Silent Hills, is in development.

It includes a team including Metal Gear Solid’s creator Hideo Kojima, Pan’s Labrynth, Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro, and The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus.

According to Metro UK, the game was originally hinted at before Germany’s Gamescon, simply under the mysterious moniker “P.T.” As IGN notes, the trailer is an interactive teaser trailer released on the Playstation Store.

Kojima – who, as Metro notes, has never been good at revealing details for his games – was mum during the reveal, but did go into detail about his relations with director del Toro.

“The one thing that I can say about Silent Hills, and this is something I’ve been discussing with Guillermo del Toro as well, is that originally we were thinking of making a game that would make you pee your pants, but at this point we’ve changed our minds, and now we’re aiming for a game that will make you s*** your pants.”

“One thing that you have to keep in mind is that,” Kojima continued, “if a game is too scary, people just won’t play it. If it gets too scary you just keep your eyes shut and soon it will be over. But if it’s a game, people will just stop. So that’s why there’s a limit on how scary you can make a game.”

“But in this case we’re totally ignoring that and, you know what? If you don’t want to keep on playing through the game, so be it. We don’t care. That’s the game we are aiming for.”

Kojima also noted that his own personal studio – Kojima Productions – is heading development of the game.

The trailer also featured the music of composer Akira Yamaoka, who had composed the critically lauded music of the original game series.

In retrospect, IGN notes, Kojima has been hinting about this project for a while, including comments about wanting to make a game with Norman Reedus of The Walking Dead and constantly praising the Silent Hill series.

However, given his penchant for trying to mislead gamers, Kojima hid his involvement behind a fictional studio called 7780s Studio, which, as Metro notes, is a reference to Silent Hill’s nickname in Japan: “Shizuoka.” The Shizuoka prefecture, the site notes, is a 7,780 kilometers square area whose name literally translates to “Quiet Hills.”

Del Toro, as noted by The Independent, was originally planning to make a horror game trilogy called Insane for publisher THQ, but the project was folded when the company went under financially.

It is unknown, however, if the plural title of Silent Hills means that there will be multiple games for the project or will have multiple iterations of the infamous town, as Eurogamer suggests.

Kojima also revealed that his Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeros and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be released soon on PC via the Steam online store. As we reported on earlier, both Reedus and del Toro commented upon the latter game's trailer. Perhaps this was another hint of the Silent Hills project?
