NBC certainly has the musical bug. Just days after the peacock network announced who will play Peter Pan, Today Show co-host Kathie Lee Gifford said that she’s written a special musical about the morning show. Thankfully, it won’t be as long as Today, which runs four hours every day.
During today’s episode, Gifford, who had Regis Philbin filling in for Hoda Kotb, explained that the producers had asked her about writing a Today musical in January.
“I said, ‘What? It’s going to be a disaster!’” she recalled. “They said, ‘That’s why we want you!’”
She was given an 18-minute block, so she wrote the lyrics and got David Friedman to help on the music. Then, she surprised Philbin by telling him that he would be the extra “talent” added to make sure that the musical has at least one experienced performer.
In addition, the musical, titled Not Today And Tomorrow’s Not Good Either, will be performed live, just like NBC’s other musicals. However, no date has been set.
As Gifford joked about during the segment, she does have experience in musical disasters. Her first attempt at a full Broadway show, Scandalous, lasted just a month of regular performances before closing in December 2012.
