Minnesota Twins star prospect Byron Buxton knocked unconscious during game

Minnesota Twins star prospect Byron Buxton was knocked unconscious during a double-A game in New Britain, CT, after colliding with a teammate in the outfield while diving for a ball.

The collision was caught on tape by the New Britain Rock Cats.

Twins general manager Terry Ryan was watching the game and told, the broadcasters that “Buxton has a concussion, so we’ll have to take the normal procedures and protocol for concussion symptoms,” Ryan said. He’ll certainly be watched. It could have been a lot worse. We are grateful for just the concussion. That was very scary.”

According to the 2014 Prospect Watch, Buxton was the number one prospect in all of baseball entering the season. He was the second overall selection in the 2012 draft.

Last year, Buxton hit .334 with 18 triples and 12 homeruns, along with 55 stolen bases in the single-A Florida State and Midwest leagues, according to MLB Stats.

This year, he was batting .240 with four homeruns and 36 stolen bases for Class-A Advanced Fort Myers before being brought up to New Britain, according to MLB.com.

Buxton was advancing up the minor league ladder in a similar fashion to Mike Trout, who made the Los Angeles Angels after just two seasons in the minors, before he injured both wrists in a five-month period, between March and July.
