By Kyle Johnson,

MTV announced on Tuesday that coming-of-age drama Finding Carter would be returning for a sophomore season.

The second season of the series, which stars Kathyrn Prescott, Cynthia Watros (right) and Anna Jacoby-Heron, got a 12-episode commitment, the Los Angeles Times reports.

"The creative minds behind Finding Carter did an exceptional job bringing this story to life and drawing our audience in," MTV programming president Susanne Daniels said. "I'm looking forward to another season following Carter on her journey."

Finding Carter is about a teen who discovers the woman she thought was her mother was actually a woman who abducted her when she was younger.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series is averaging 1.25 million viewers for the initial telecast. The ratings then grow 70 percent when DVR and delayed viewings are included. Since kicking off the first season on July 8, Finding Carter has been streamed 5 million times and is MTV's no. 1 streaming series.

Finding Carter is the second freshman series under Daniels to be renewed, with the other being Faking It.
