NBC News is reportedly ready to replace David Gregory with Chuck Todd as the host of Meet The Press. The long-running Sunday morning political talkshow has been tanking in the ratings in recent years, so the change is expected to come swiftly - possibly as soon as this weekend.
Rumors about the sudden change began circulating around Washington earlier this week when Politico first reported that Todd was the network’s top pick to replace Gregory. NBC executives are apparently pleased with Todd’s dedication to politics, even if he isn’t exactly a TV star.
Now, CNN Money is reporting that the change could take place so quickly that Gregory might not host this weekend’s episode.
CNN’s source said that if NBC does not make the official statement today, expect it to happen on Friday.
Politico reported that Gregory might leave NBC News all together. He was once a rising star on the network and even a potential Today Show replacement for Matt Lauer, if Lauer ever left. However, since taking over Meet the Press six years ago after the sudden death of Tim Russert, the network’s opinion of him has declined, as have the show’s ratings. There were even rumors that he underwent psychological tests.
Todd is currently the host of MSNBC’s 9 a.m. show Daily Rundown and frequently appears as a political analyst elsewhere for NBC News.
NBC News has not commented on the situation.
