Manchester United is reportedly on the verge of signing Argentine midfielder Ángel Di María.
It had been speculated that Di María's days with the reigning champions of Europe were numbered ever since Real signed James Rodriguez this summer. Di María brings the type of quality that Manchester United desperately needs after a disappointing 2-1 loss to Swansea in their Premier League opener.
Di María was named Man of the Match when Real Madrid defeated Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Final in May, which should excite United's massive fan base who want to see the club back in European competitions next season. United failed to qualify for the Champions or Europa Leagues last year after finishing in a disappointing seventh place in the league table in their first season in 23 years without Sir Alex Ferguson as manager.
Up until now, United's biggest signing since the end of last year had been that of their new manager, Dutchman Louis van Gaal. van Gaal will be pleased to have a world-class midfielder who can set up his talented forwards Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney. United knew they needed to bring in an impact player if they are to compete with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City for the Premier League title, as both those teams made upgrades to their rosters this summer.
A player of Di Maria's caliber does not come cheap however, as Daily Mail has reported it will cost United £50 million pounds for the dynamic playmaker.
However, coming off the worst season in recent memory, United had no choice but to pay up, especially with French champions Paris Saint-Germain looking to sign Di María as well.
