Ohio State trustees won't reinstate fired band director

By Kyle Johnson,

Ohio State University board of trustees announced on Friday that they will not help reinstate the fired band director.

Jonathan Waters was fired by the university in July after an investigation found that the school's band had "a sexualized culture," USA Today reports.

The investigation noted that Waters should have been aware, if he wasn't, of the culture that had developed in the band and he was let go after failing to stop it.

He appealed to the board of trustees on Thursday, seeking to be reinstated, but the board opted to back Ohio State, according to WCMH-TV, releasing a letter saying they stand "firmly behind the ... investigation and University's decision to terminate Mr. Waters."

They added that they would not bring the matter up for discussion at the upcoming board meeting and "we are moving forward as a University."

Band members have come forward to side with the former band director saying that Ohio State went overboard in their decision and that Waters shouldn't be punished for the actions of a few.

David Axelrod, Waters' lawyer, said the letter wasn't surprising. "It's sad that the university is basing these actions on a report that is so deeply flawed no one believes it but the university. And it's hard to imagine that the university really believes it anymore either."
