Authorities said Thursday that one person was killed and another was injured when a boat exploded in Long Island.
Reuters noted that police have said the explosion happened Wednesday at the Manhasset Bay Marina in Port Washington while the boat was refueling.
ABC News reported that the deceased man has been identified as the former mayor of Plandome Manor and former New York City assistant traffic commissioner for the transportation department, Bob Hogan.
The incident happened just before 3 p.m. and the blast catapulted the 74-year-old Hogan overboard. He sustained fatal injuries. His shipmate jumped into the water on his own power and was not injured. Another man tending to the marina was badly burned in the explosion. Witnesses said that a worker was trying to tow the burning boat into the open water.
Two other workers at the pump escaped unharmed.
A nearby dock also caught fire and damaged some vessels there.
Nassau County officials have not released the exact cause of the blast as an investigation by homicide detectives is still underway.
