Pittsburgh Pirates fans may start panicking because the team is reportedly expected to place outfielder Andrew McCutchen on the 15-day disabled list.
It’s the last thing Pirates fans want to hear but according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, McCutchen is expected to be placed on the DL and could be out for a month.
The centerfielder was injured in the eighth inning of Sunday‘s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
McCutchen hit a sacrifice fly and grabbed his side in pain as he jogged to first base. He then needed to be helped off the field, which had Pittsburgh baseball fans crying out in unison.
The 27-year-old has never spent time on the DL since he began his career in 2009. If he misses sustainable time, the Pirates could miss the playoffs.
At the moment, the team is in third place in NL Central and a game and a half behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers. The Pirates also sit just a half game out of the second wild card spot.
The value of last year’s NL MVP speaks for itself as Baseball-Reference.com noted, he is batting .311 this season with 17 homers and 67 RBIs.
