MTV announced today that “Stay With Me” singer Sam Smith will be the last performer to take the stage with the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 24.
Smith is nominated in the best male video category for the hit single, as well as being nominated as one of MTV’s Artists to Watch.
Smith joins an impressive list of performers, which includes Beyoncé, Iggy Azalea, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj, Billboard reports.
The British singer has earned rave reviews for his debut album, In The Lonely Hour, and Smith is often compared to fellow Adele in terms of musical sound and influence.
News of Smith joining the expansive list of VMA performers comes on the heels of speculation that Smith would sing the theme of the next James Bond movie. However, he squashed those rumors, telling Entertainment Weekly, “No, I have no idea what that was about and I know as much as you do. You probably know more than me.”
Currently, Smith is in the early stages of putting together his next album, but for now, fans can wait in anticipation for his American award show debut on Sunday. No word yet on what song Smith plans to perform at the VMAs but based on his talent, it is sure to be a powerful performance.
