It has been reported that the San Diego Padres have agreed to hire A.J. Preller as the new general manager for the organization. Sources close to the situation say Preller’s deal is a five-year contract.
He has been working as an assistant general manager for the Texas Rangers, and has been involved with the Rangers for 10 years.
Not only does he have experience with the Rangers' organization, but also with the larger world of baseball. He is known for being a Latin American scout.
San Diego was looking for a general manager with all the skills that Preller possesses, such as someone with a great scouting record in the international market. Preller fit the bill, so now he has the opportunity to help the Padres achieve success in the future.
According to ESPN, Billy Eppler was another name that was in consideration for the Padres general manger position.
The Padres, as of August 6, are 11.5 games out of first place in the National League Western Division, as recorded by MLB.com.
