Team USA cancels Senegal trip over Ebola threat

By Michelle Kapusta,

As cases, deaths and fears over the Ebola outbreak grow in West Africa, Team USA has decided to cancel an upcoming trip to Senegal.

According to ESPN, USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said Friday that the planned Aug. 27 trip will not happen after the declaration of the "public health emergencyā€¯ by the World Health Organization.

"I speak for all at USA Basketball when I say we're extremely disappointed we will not be able to visit Senegal," said Colangelo. "Our entire traveling party was very much looking forward to the experience."

SBNation noted that Team USA is set to open FIBA World Cup play on Aug. 30. The trip to the West African nation was a scheduled stop on the way to play Finland. While the risk of contracting the virus in Senegal is said to be low, Colangelo did not want to leave that to chance.

The deadly Ebola virus has plagued the countries of Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria since March and has caused upwards of 1,000 deaths.

There is no known cure for the virus, which is spread through human contract.

The symptoms of Ebola include arthritis, chills, diarrhea, fatigue, fever, headache, nausea, vomiting and internal as well as external bleeding.
