According to Entertainment Weekly, Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies announced on Sunday that they plan to release a sequel called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 on June 3, 2016. Michael Bay is to return with his partners from Platinum Dunes and produce the film. The Turtles' writing team of Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec are to write the script for the sequel and executive produce. There was no announcement as to whether Jonathan Liebesman will return to direct the movie.

According to Brad Grey, CEO and chairman of Paramount Pictures, “To know moviegoers are embracing the Turtles with such enthusiasm is everything that we and all our filmmakers have been hoping for. We are thrilled with this weekend’s result, the enduring power of this franchise, and the opportunity to make another one.”

HitFix noted that the Paramount Pictures film was expected to have an opening between $45-50 million, however, the film opened with a broader audience than expected and earned $65 million within three days. It seems like the Michael Bay produced adventure did better than expected. The film is predicted to hit between $150-170 domestic global returns to combat the movie’s $125 million budget.
