'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' prequel 'Leatherface' hires writer

A prequel to the 1974 horror classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is moving forward at Millennium Films, and we now have official word about who will write the newest installment.

According to The Wrap, Leatherface will be written by Seth M. Sherwood, an up and coming writer who has worked on some short films. Sherwood also has a few other projects in development, including a supernatural film to be directed by Paranormal Activity 5's Greg Plotkin.

Plot details of the film are being kept under wraps, but according to Bloody Disgusting, the film will evidently take place in the 1970s and center around Leatherface's teenage years.

Leatherface will be released by Millennium Films, the studio behind the most recent film in the franchise, Texas Chainsaw 3D. However, while 3D ended on a cliffhanger, which presumably would have set up a new franchise, Leatherface will likely not follow up on the events of this film, as it will be jumping back in time before both 3D and the original Texas Chainsaw.

This choice to give a different take on the franchise, rather than continue directly from the end of the previous film, could be a reaction to the financial disappointment of Texas Chainsaw 3D. According to Box Office Mojo, the film grossed $34 million domestic, with a $21 million opening weekend.
