Top 10 Goo Goo Doll songs

When most people hear “Goo Goo Dolls”, they are prone to think “Oh, that’s the Iris band.” This notion suggests that they are a one-hit wonder, but the fact is that there is simply not much out there that could be farther from the truth. Boasting one album each of Gold, Double Platinum, Triple Platinum certification, the Buffalo, New York natives have also been nominated for four Grammy awards, including “Record of the Year” and “Song of the Year” for that one Iris song per AceShowBiz.com. While their most recent albums haven’t generated quite the same amount of buzz, John Rzeznik and Robby Takac have still produced plenty of quality music via these works. Hits such as “Stay With You”, “Better Days”, “Home”, and “Come to Me” are prime examples of this. “Goo Goo Dolls” still tour as well, and they are currently finishing up a tour with fellow pop-rock band Daughtry.

Album: Let Love In

A mighty and authoritative blast of musical synthesis washes over the listener right from the get-go, and sets the tone for the rest of this fiercly influential track.

[new page = 9. “Better Days” ]

Album: Let Love In

A touching ballad about the tragic state of the world with a hint of hope for it’s revival, “Better Days” is a distinct track for everyone out there who is hurting, or has a loved one that is.

[new page = 8. “Become” ]

Album: Let Love In

Rzeznik’s vintage vocal arrangement of soft to loud and back to soft has never been more evident than in this song. Rzeznik uses it to sing about one who has “become” beautiful, and therefore shouldn’t hide away and cut themselves off from the rest of the world.

Album: Let Love In

Yet another commanding rocker anthem by the band gives way to “soft” Rzeznik, The track is a beckoning call to one’s love, affirming that they will indeed commit to being with them.

[new page = 6. “Name” ]

Album: A Boy Named Goo

A band’s first breakthrough hit has to make their Top Ten list right (and break the Let Love In march as well)? The combination of acoustic tempo and Rzeznik’s pondering lyrics give the track an immensely soothing feel.

[new page = 5. “Here Is Gone” ]

Album: Gutterflower

Persistence and tenacity emminate from every inch of “Here is Gone”. It will have you jumping out of your seat for the majority of it’s four minute length.

[new page = 4. “Sympathy” ]

Album: Gutterflower

The band’s unique tuning techniques are on full display here, as Rzeznik reflects upon the regrets and trials of his past. Inescapably catchy, “Sympathy” can be described as none other than an acoustic classic.

[new page = 3. ”Without You Here” ]

Album: Let Love In

“Without You Here” is one of the band’s gloomiest tracks to date, expelling pain from it’s pores much like humans do via their actions. Rzeznik’s desperate and frustrated lyrics lend credence to this.

[new page = 2. ”Black Balloon” ]

Album: Dizzy Up the Girl

The opening riffs have tend to have a great propensity to do what I like to call “mooding”, which refers to the action of instantaneously placing one into a certain mood, regardless of the present circumstance or situation. It is, in my opinion, most telling factor of a truly note-worthy song. Compound that with some of the best songwriting the band has ever produced and a bridge that is flat out overwhelming emotionally, and there’s no denying that this song is of “superstar” status. And it’s not even #1.

[new page = 1. ”Iris” ]

Album: Dizzy Up the Girl

Come on, could anyone anywhere really place any other song here? This song envokes chills every time I give it a listen (which is quite often). As such, I must admit that I could go on for pages and pages about the title track to the 1998 Nicholas Cage romantic comedy “City of Angels”, but restrictive bounds (fortunately) prevent me from doing so. So I’ll just leave it at this: Iris is not only by far the best song of the long and storied “Goo Goo Dolls” career, but of a generation as well.
