Top 10 Presidential sex scandals

The President of the United States. As the face of the American people, the President has a lot of responsibility at his fingertips. We look to them to solve the problems that are facing our country and most of us place our trust in them. Of course, this trust can easily be broken by the most scandalous situations that they end up being a part of.

One of the scandals that continue to follow Presidents even after their time has come are the sex scandals. From affairs to illegitimate children, these Presidents have left us with lasting questions about the nature of their relationships with certain people.

For some reason, we are so fascinated with these types of scandals and usually, these Presidents come back from them, but other times, it follows them wherever they go, such as Bill Clinton and the Monica Lewinsky saga.

Join us as we count down some of the top ten scandals that have befallen past presidents, many who came before most of us were alive.

10. Grover Cleveland

While this incident occurred before Cleveland was President of the United States, it was revealed by the mother of his child that he was the father of a son that was put up for adoption. His political opponents tried to use this fact against him at election time, but it didn’t affect his eventual win.

9. Woodrow Wilson

When Wilson became engaged to a woman named Edith Galt, this caused scandal since his first wife, First Lady Ellen Wilson, had only died less than a year earlier. It was thought to be disrespectful that Woodrow would move on so fast, especially at the time when it was considered proper to mourn for a year.

8. Thomas Jefferson

Back during the time of slavery, there were many cases in which male slave owners ended up fathering a child with their slaves. One rumor surrounded the possibility that President Thomas Jefferson had fathered a child with a slave named Sally Hemings. It was revealed through testing in 1998 that Jefferson possibly fathered one of her children.

7. Warren Harding

Warren Harding was rumored to have two mistresses, one who was given hush money to keep quiet about the affair and another, Nan Britton, who wrote a book called The President’s Daughter, in which she claimed Harding was the father of her child, although this has never been established as truth.

6. Dwight D. Eisenhower

During World War II, it is rumored that Eisenhower began to see his driver, Kay Summersby, in an affair that continued until an alleged threat by a General that he would be kicked out of the Army. A book about the alleged affair was written by Kay Summersby in 1975 called Past Forgetting: My Love Affair with Dwight D. Eisenhower.

5. James Buchanan

James Buchanan was the only President who never married and it is rumored that he was gay, especially since he lived with a man named William Rufus King for 15 years.

4. Franklin Roosevelt
Roosevelt had a mistress who he once dumped at the request of his wife, Eleanor, but he kept up his relationship with the woman, Lucy Mercer, later on down the road. However, the affair didn’t come to light until years after his death.

3. Lyndon Johnson

President Lyndon Johnson was said to have many affairs, including one in which a woman named Madeleine Brown gave birth to a son. While this was an affair that happened before his Presidency after the death of John F. Kennedy, it is one of many stories that we’ve heard regarding Presidential affairs.

2. John F. Kennedy

When you hear John F. Kennedy, it’s hard not to think of Marilyn Monroe since she is one of the many women he has been linked with. It was kept secret for a long time that he continued to have affairs even after marrying Jacqueline Bouvier. Some of his alleged partners include Marlene Dietrich and Judith Exner.

1. Bill Clinton

When we think of Presidential sex scandals, the first one we think of is Monica Lewinsky and Bill Clinton. Due to his infamous line where he insisted he “did not have sex with that woman,” he almost lost his Presidency in the aftermath of the affair. While in the middle of a lawsuit by Paula Jones, who accused him of sexual harassment, he made this claim on the stand and ended up perjuring himself.
