'Terminator Genisys' plot details finally confirmed, first pictures shows stars packing major heat

Finally, we know what Terminator: Genisys is going to be about.

The first in a planned trilogy from Skydance and Paramount will try to revive and reboot the beleaguered franchise, which has been hit hard by two straight lackluster movies. Now with an entirely new cast, the familiar endoskeleton killing machines are heading back to the big screen.

Genisys is the focus of the new Entertainment Weekly issue, which will come in two different covers. The first features Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Sarah Connor and Jai Courtney (Divergent) as Kyle Reese on a motorcycle. The second features Matt Smith (Doctor Who) and Jason Clarke (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) as John Connor, standing in front of an endoskeleton. In both covers, the guys are squinting and carrying some serious weaponry.

According to EW, Genisys starts in 2029, with the Future War already raging. John sends Kyle back to 1984 to stop a Terminator from killing Sarah. That sounds familiar - since it’s the plot of James Cameron’s beloved original film. But Genisys will take a new turn.

In this version of the story, Sarah’s parents were killed by a Terminator when she was 9 and is now being raised by an older T-800 model. That older Terminator is the one Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to play.

“Since she was 9 years old, she has been told everything that was supposed to happen,” producer David Ellison told EW. “But Sarah fundamentally rejects that destiny. She says, ‘That’s not what I want to do.’ It’s her decision that drives the story in a very different direction.”

Genisys is set for release on July 1, 2015. The sequels will follow on May 19, 2017 and June 29, 2018.
