Joni Mitchell personally squashed biopic starring Taylor Swift

Over two years ago, there were rumors that Taylor Swift would play legendary singer/songwriter/artist Joni Mitchell, but that never happened. It turns out that the reason was Mitchell herself, who told the producers not to make it.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, Mitchell said that she told the producers that the book it was supposed to be based on, Sheila Weller’s Girls Like Us, was nothing but gossip.

“I squelched that,” the “Big Yellow Taxi” singer said, reports Variety. “I said to the producer, ‘All you’ve got is a girl with high cheekbones.’ It’s just a lot of gossip, you don’t have the great scenes.”

When asked about the book, Mitchell added, “There’s a lot of nonsense about me in books. . .assumptions, assumptions, assumptions.”

The Girls Like Us film was first reported on in April 2012 and would have been Swift’s first big film role if it came to fruition. It would also have featured the lives of Mitchell’s contemporaries, Carole King and Carly Simon. Midnight in Paris actress Alison Pill was considered for King, but neither of those parts were cast.

Swift, who is currently out promoting 1989, recently appeared in The Giver, opposite Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges. She also appeared in an episode of New Girl and had a part in the ensemble comedy Valentine’s Day.
