Chris Rock, Malaak Compton-Rock divorcing after nearly two decades together

Despite the critical success of his latest film, this holiday season was not completely joyful for comedian Chris Rock. Over the weekend, his wife, Malaak Compton-Rock, confirmed that they are divorcing after nearly two decades together.

In a statement to People magazine on Sunday, Compton-Rock wrote, “After much contemplation and 19 years of marriage, Chris and I have decided to go our separate ways.”

“Being fortunate enough to lead a life of service by working with those most vulnerable makes me well aware of life's blessings, even when faced with difficulties,” Compton-Rock continued. “While recognizing that this is a significant change, my children remain at the center of my life and their well-being is my top priority.”

She concluded by asking the public to respect her family and grant them privacy through this difficult time.

Robert S. Cohen, the Top Five star’s attorney, also confirmed the split in a statement to People.

While there were claims several years ago that Rock had fathered a child out of wedlock, those rumors were denied. In 2007, they also faced divorce rumors, but the couple stayed together.

However, a source for E! News said that the couple have been “living separate lives for some time.”

The couple married in 1996 and share two daughters, who are 12 and 10. Compton-Rock is the founder of the non-profit group styleWORKS.
