Gary Sinise slams Howard Dean's 'American Sniper' criticism

Gary Sinise, who leads a foundation to help American veterans, came out in support of Clint Eastwood’s January blockbuster American Sniper, responding to former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean’s recent comments about the film’s audience.

While on Real Time With Bill Maher last week, Dean said that the film’s success shows how angry the audience is. “There’s a lot of anger in this country, and the people who go see this movie are people who are very angry,” Dean said, notes The Hollywood Reporter.

Sinise, like many celebrities who have expressed their opinion on the film, took to Twitter to directly respond to Dean’s comments.

“I saw American Sniper and would not consider myself to be an angry person,” Sinise wrote. “You certainly have a right to make stupid blanket statements, suggesting that all people who see this film are angry, but how is that helpful sir? Do you also suggest that everyone at Warner Brothers is angry because they released the film? That Clint Eastwood, Jason Hall, Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller and the rest of the cast and crew are angry because they made the film? Chris Kyle's story deserved to be told.”

Dean’s comments weren’t the only controversial statements made on Real Time. Maher himself called Chris Kyle, the film’s subject, a “psychopath patriot.”

Sinise runs the Gary Sinise Foundation, which aims to help veterans and their families. The former CSI: NY actor is set to guest star on Criminal Minds.

As for Sniper, the film has grossed over $200 million at the box office.
