SXSW announces massive film slate, including Melissa McCarthy's 'Spy' and Will Ferrell's 'Get Hard'

SXSW organizers announced the slate for its film festival and it looks daunting for anyone planning to go. The festival’s line-up includes some major Hollywood premieres, including Spy with Melissa Mccarthy and the Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart comedy Get Hard.

In total, 145 movies will be screened during the event in Austin, Texas. There will be 100 World Premieres, 13 North American premieres and 11 U.S. premieres. Organizers said they received a record 2,385 feature film submissions.

Aside from major new movies, there will also be a special screening of The Road Warrior, the 1981 film from Mad Max director George Miller, with a Q&A session. A collection of shorts made by Jonathan Demme in Austin in the 1980s will also be shown.

Fans of Judd Apatow who can make it will be pleased to know that a work-in-progress version of Trainwreck with Amy Schumer will be screened. That movie doesn’t hit theaters until July 17.

As for Spy, that film re-teams McCarthy with Paul Feig, who will directing her in Ghostbusters. That film hits theaters on May 22.

Get Hard opens on March 27 and is the new movie from Men In Black 3’s Etan Cohen.

As previously announced, Russell Brand’s BRAND: A Second Coming will be the festival’s opening film. Ex Machina with Oscar Isaac was also a previously announced selection.

Other spotlight movies include Hello, My Name Is Doris with Sally Field; the Brian Wilson biopic Love & Mercy with Paul Dano; David Gordon Green’s Manglehorn; and Alex Gibney’s Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine.

Robert Duvall’s Wild Horses with James Franco is part of the Narrative Spotlight. Ryan Gosling’s directing effort Lost River will be shown under the Festival Favorites banner.

The movies in the Narrative feature Competition include : Hannah Fidell’s 6 Years; Craig Macniell’s THE BOY; Benjamin Dickinson’s Creative Control; Alison Bagnall’s Funny Bunny; Patrick Wang’s The Grief of Others; Trey Edward Shults’ KRISHA; J. Davis’ Manson Family Vacation with Jay Duplass; Quitters by Noah Pritzker; Joseph Frank & Zachary Reed’s Sweaty Betty; and Steven Piet’s Uncle John.
