'It Follows' gets national release, VOD plans delayed

After taking in impressive numbers during its limited release, the acclaimed horror film It Follows is getting a national theatrical release. The film’s overwhelmingly positive response has forced Radius-TWC to delay plans for a Video On Demand release.

The film opened on March 13 at four locations - two in New York and two in Los Angeles - and made an astonishing $160,089, notes Variety. This past weekend, its theater count was upped to 32 and it grossed $344,874.

Today, Radius confirmed to Variety that the movie’s release will get even wider this Friday and will be shown at 1,200 locations.

According to TheWrap, the Weinstein Company’s niche label was planning to treat It Follows like any other film it releases. The VOD release was scheduled for March 27, but that has now been delayed indefinitely. That’s a necessary move, since many major theater chains don’t like films being available at home during a theatrical run.

It Follows was written and directed by David Robert Mitchell and earned rave reviews after its Cannes Film Festival debut in 2014. It stars Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist, Daniel Zovatto and Jake Weary.
