Martin Sheen recalls son Charlie's 2011 public meltdown, calls it 'very painful'

There’s nothing worse than watching your child go down a bad path, but in Martin Sheen’s case, his son was doing it in a very public way back in 2011.

Sheen opened up about his son Charlie Sheen’s meltdown during an interview with Radio Times, saying he felt “powerless” throughout the ordeal.

“What he was going through at that time, we were powerless to do much. Except to pray for him and lift him up,” he explained.

The Grace and Frankie star continued to explain what he did try to do was “be as present as possible." He added, "You have to be aware of the circumstances. You have to be aware of many things that the public is not aware of."

He said his son’s public rants, My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat is Not An Option tour, getting fired from Two and a Half Men and other unfortunate events were simply a cry for help while he was deep into his addiction.

Sheen called it a “very desperate situation," adding, “he was doing what he felt would get him out of it – going public. And it was very painful. No less painful for him.”
