New 'Spider-Man' director shortlist doesn't include Drew Goddard? (Report)

While it seemed that Daredevil producer Drew Goddard already had the job of directing Marvel and Sony’s first Spider-Man movie, the studios are still looking elsewhere. In fact, a new report includes a shortlist that doesn’t have his name.

Deadline is reporting that the studio’s list includes filmmakers who all have indie credentials, but no experience when it comes to directing action movies. The names are Jonathan Levine (50/50, Warm Bodies); Ted Melfi (St. Vincent); Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect); John Frances & Jonathan M. Goldstein (the upcoming Vacation); and Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite).

The site stresses that these are the guys in the mix for the job, but it doesn’t mean that they are the only names being considered. Sony, which is still producing the film, will likely announce a decision by next week.

As late as March, Goddard was linked as the writer/director for the new Spidey movie. Goddard was developing Sony’s Sinister Six movie when the studio still had faith in the Amazing Spider-Man movies. He is still in the Marvel fold as an executive producer on Netflix’s Daredevil.

While none of the directors on the shortlist have experience with action movies, they do all have one thing in common. They’ve directed comedies. Marvel chief Kevin Feige has said that they want to focus on Spider-Man’s comedy angle, so that makes sense.

Marvel still hasn’t cast a star, but the new Spider-Man is supposed to be making his debut in next year’s Captain America: Civil War. The latest rumor has Asa Butterfield as a “top pick” for the role.

To add confusion to all of this, Sony also has Phil Lord and Chris Miller working on an animated Spider-Man movie.
