Rick Santorum, George Pataki enter packed Republican presidential race

More Republicans continue to join the presidential race, making it difficult to keep track of how many candidates voters have to chose between next year. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and former New York Gov. George Pataki both joined the race this week.

Santorum is experienced on the national stage, winning the 2012 Iowa caucuses and 10 other states during the primaries that year. He announced his plans to run again Wednesday in Cabot, Pennsylvania, notes The New York Times.

“Working families don’t need another president tied to big government or big money,” Santorum said. The social conservative also warned against “the gathering storm of radical Islam” after he wound up being listed as an enemy in ISIS’ English-language magazine.

On the other side of the Republican spectrum is Pataki, who has never run for President, despite considering it in 2008 and 2012. He released a video today to announce his plans.

“We are all in this together,” Pataki said in the video. “And let us all understand that what unites us is so much more important than what might seem superficially to divide us.”

As the Associated Press notes, Pataki also stressed his experience as New York Governor during the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. He held the officer for three terms and was able to work in a heavily Democratic state.

Santorum and Pataki join a packed crowd of Republican candidates that already includes Senators Rand Paul, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, Carly Fiorina and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush are also expected to run.
