21 Tops Box Office

The No. 1 film, "21" made $23.7 million this weekend.

A gambling film starring Kate Bosworth and Kevin Spacey, 21 will finish at the top of this weekend's box office with $23.7 million in its debut, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The movie features Jim Sturgess, along with Bosworth and Spacey, as math geniuses who count cards at Las Vegas blackjack tables. Taking the No. 1 spot, 21 ended the run of Dr. Suess' Horton Hears a Who!, which had been at No. 1 the last two weekends.

Horton Hears a Who!, the first film to eclipse the $100 million mark this year, finished the week in second place with $17.4 million.

The box office as a whole took a significant drop compared to last year. The top 12 movies accumulated $90 million, down 23 percent from the same weekend last year, when Blades of Glory finished No. 1, making $33 million. This dip should be attributed to a downtrodden economy and also a lack in quality movies.
