The Social Network screenwriter Aaron Sorkin’s new HBO drama finally has an official title. The show, which will star Jeff Daniels as a prime time network news anchor, will be titled The Newsroom.

Speculation that the show would carry the simple title began earlier this month, when Media Bistro reported that HBO will call it Newsroom and was still deciding about using “the” in the title. While in development, the project was called More As This Story Develops.

Wednesday, Deadline confirmed the new title, which HBO itself confirmed in a promotional trailer for the network’s 2012 programs.

The series centers on Will McAllister, played be Daniels, who is an anchor at cable network UBS and is reportedly based on former MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann. Emily Mortimer was cast as McAllister’s new executive producer, while Alison Pill, John Gallagher Jr, Olivia Munn, Dev Patel and Thomas Sadoski play staffers. Law & Order’s Sam Waterston plays the president of the network. Jane Fonda signed on for a recurring role in the show last week.

Sorkin won an Oscar earlier year for his adapted screenplay for The Social Network. He also co-wrote the screenplay for Moneyball with Brad Pitt. Sorkin’s previous television credits include creating The West Wing, which ran from 1999 to 2006, and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, which ran for just one season from 2006 to 2007.
