Abbey Road Studios to Be Protected

Beatles Studio gains historical status.

The Beatles helped to shape world music and now it seems a piece of their history will be preserved. Abbey Road Studios, where they recorded many of their greatest hits, has been historically listed, thus protecting it from being radically altered now or in the future.

The studio, whose official address is 3 Abbey Road, has been given Grade II status, the second highest available. This means that any owner of the property must keep the character of the property intact but does allow for internal changes.

The property was listed by Culture Minister Margaret Hodge for its historical merit as it had “produced some of the very best music in the world,” according to English Heritage, the group that moved to get it listed in the first place.

This listing and EMI’s, the current owner of the studio, plans to revitalize Abbey Road Studios will ensure that current and future artists will be able to record in the same rooms as some of history’s greatest musical icons.
