Abigail Spencer is off to see the wizard.
The relatively unknown actress, possibly best recognized from her role as school teacher Suzanne Farrell on AMC's Mad Men, has joined the cast of Sam Raimi's Oz, the Great and Powerful.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Spencer joins a cast that's already filled with pretty young things, including Mila Kunis, the newly Mrs. Daniel Craig a.k.a Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams, who all play witches in a pre-Dorothy Oz.
James Franco is playing the titular magician-slash-faux-wizard in the unofficial Wizard of Oz prequel, while Scrubs comedian Zach Braff is attached to play his assistant.
The Hollywood Reporter says Spencer's character is not another witch, but rather a mortal woman who is a "willing subject" to Oz's magic show in Kansas, before he's swept up in a hot air balloon and whisked away to the famed Emerald City.
The movie already has a release date set, but the film could face copyright woes, according to Cinema Blend.
Disney, which will distribute Raimi's film, is clashing with Warner Bros., who claim they own all things Oz-related because they bought the rights for L. Frank Baum's novel way back in 1939.
No official copyright infringement claim has been made, however, and Collider reports that the movie is still set to hit theaters March 8, 2013.
