The Academy Awards Extend Best Picture to Ten Nominees
This year, the Academy Awards did something different. Normally, the categories nominate at most five films/actors for the award. However, this year they opted to expand the Best Picture category to ten nominees.
This expansion left many movie critics and award show experts wondering what would fill the extra five slots. Would The Hangover be nominated for an Oscar? What types of movies would get the nods that wouldn’t have gotten them in the original five?
But, after the announcement of the ten Best Picture nominees, the critics and experts found they were worried about nothing. While some of the nominees seemed like space fillers, most of the extra five nominees were worthy of a Best Picture nomination.
The ten Best Picture nominees are Avatar, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Precious, Up In The Air, District 9, The Blind Side, A Serious Man, Up, and An Education.
Many of these films have already been recognized at the Golden Globe Awards or the Screen Actors Guild Awards, but films like District 9 were a surprise to see nominated.
Anne Hathaway and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak announced the nominees for the Academy Awards at 5:30 am pt.
The Oscars will be broadcast live on March 7.
