Like the movie industry, the music industry typically starts its new year quietly, so it is no surprise that Adele’s 21, which stayed on the charts practically for the entirety of 2011, was the top-selling album on the first Billboard album chart of the year. Jason Mraz’s new single, “I Won't Give Up,” was the best-selling song on the Digital Songs Chart.
According to Reuters, 21 sold an estimated 124,000 copies in the first full week of the year, while Drake’s Take Care came in a distant number two with just 42,000 copies sold. Adele’s album has now been on the charts for 46 consecutive weeks and has come in at number one for 15 non-consecutive weeks.
AceShowBiz reports that the rest of the top ten was made up of The Black Keyes’ El Camino with 42,000 copies, Thug Motivation 103: Hustlerz Ambition by Young Jeezy with 36,000 copies and Mylo Xyloto by Coldplay sold 28,000 copies. Rihanna’s Talk That Talk, SafetySuit’s These Times, Sorry For Party Rocking by LMFAO, the Now 40 compilation and Florence and the Machine’s Ceremonials rounded out the top ten.
Jason Mraz’s “I Won’t Give Up” had a strong debut on the Hot 100, coming in at number eight, notes Billboard. The song also topped the Digital Songs Chart thanks to 229,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan’s numbers.
“I Won’t Give Up” is the highest debut for a male artist on the Hot 100 since American Idol winner David Cook’s “The Time of My Life” hit number three in June, 2008. Billboard also reports that it was the highest debut on the Digital Songs chart since Lil Wayne’s “She Will” hit number one in Sept. 2011.
Mraz’s track will be featured on his fourth album, which the “I’m Yours” singer plans to release on May 8. The album is still untitled and will be his first album since 2008’s We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things.
