After Years of English, The Latin Grammys go Spanish

For the first time, the latin Grammys are broadcast in Spanish on Univision.

Univision, the nation's leading Spanish-language network, broadcast the first Latin Grammy in the native language, rather than English, as it had been in the past years. After suffering a dwindling television audience, the Latin Grammys decided to go Spanish, and scored big with ratings, causing them to be a hit with advertisers as well as viewers. Held at the Shrine auditorium, it was a big night for the Spanish community, as not only were Anglo musical guests not present, but the popular romantic pop singer-songwriter Alejandro Sanz nabbed both Record of the Year and Song of the Year for his song "Tu No Tienes Alma." The award show was a big hit in many places: ratings, fashions, and music, as most of the music had drifted back to the roots; a sharp contrast from the "Latin explosion" of 1999.
