Aging Actress Writes Memoir
Mary Tyler Moore has recently written a new memoir, entitled Growing Up Again: Life, Loves, and Oh Yeah, Diabetes, according to aolhealth.com. Moore, who's best known for the 1970s sitcom, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, was diagnosed with type one diabetes at the age of 33.
The actress is now 72, and though she is nearly blind because of her illness, she has not stopped inspiring people and giving advice to fellow diabetes suffers, as she is a chairperson for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International.Type one diabetes affects the immune system, causing it to turn against its insulin making cells and destroying them. This type of diabetes comes with a number of complications, among them heart disease and blindness.
"I've always been independent," the actress told USA Today, "I've always had courage, but I didn't always own my diabetes."
In her interview, the actress admits to living a high stress life when she was younger, and admitted that drinking and smoking had a negative effect on her illness.
