'Alice in Wonderland' Dominates Box Office

IMAX 3-D Draws Audiences to 'Alice'

Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland cashed in an estimated $210.3 million this weekend, enabling it to break the record for highest winter opening. The film is the latest in a string of adaptations of the beloved Lewis Carroll novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. It beat fellow Imax 3-D and box office juggernaut, Avatar.

The film, starring Johnny Depp and Australian actress, Mia Wasikowska, received most of its revenue from 3-D screens.

The success of both Alice and Avatar quells any doubts about the lasting impact of 3-D films. However, unlike Avatar, Alice is likely to have trouble keeping its ticket sales in Imax 3-D as DreamWorks Animation's How To Train Your Dragon will soon take over Imax theaters on March 26.

From Los Angeles Times:

Disney Distribution President, Chuck Viane said, "In theaters with multiple formats, we saw that the Imax 3-D sold out first, then regular 3-D, and then 2-D."

The film has received overall positive reviews from audiences. Critics on the other hand, have been giving it mixed reviews.

Coming in second place was the R-rated drama Brooklyn's Finest, while Shutter Island fell into second place.
