Amanpour Moves from CNN to ABC
CNN's chief international correspondent, Christiane Amanpour, will be taking over as anchor for ABC's Sunday Beltway show, This Week.
Amanpour is replacing George Stephanopoulos, who will be taking Diane Sawyer's position at Good Morning America. Sawyer became anchor of ABC's evening newscast.
As one of the country's most respected international correspondents, Amanpour will appear on additional ABC News programs to provide international analysis of important issues. Amanpour will also anchor primetime documentaries for international subjects.
Amanpour told The Washington Post:
"This is an opportunity to explain domestic politics and how it impacts the world. I've always tried to make foreign news less foreign."
Amanpour has lived in Iran and Britain, and is the daughter of an Iranian father and British mother. She will be the first broadcast TV Sunday Beltway show anchor with a non-American accent.
Queen Elizabeth II made Amanpour a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 2007 for her contributions to journalism. Sarajevo named her an honorary citizen in 1998 for spreading the truth during the Bosnia war during 1992 to 1995. Amanpour has reported on all of the major hot spots around the globe, including Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, and Israel, among many others.
Amanpour starts work with ABC in August, and This Week will continue to be broadcast from the Newseum in Washington D.C.
