Ambassador Angelina Admits Work is Emotionally Taxing
In an interview with "Newsweek," actress Angela Jolie confesses that her work as a U.N. ambassador has overwhelmed her at times. According to her, Jolie was on the verge of tears whenever she attempted to talk about it for the first two years. When Jolie visited Oure Cassoni refugee camp (between Darfur and Chad) this past February, she encountered a young boy tied to a pole. The 7-year old had spent 48 hours hiding in the bush after the bombing of his village. He was tied up to prevent him from wandering or hurting himself. Jolie reveals that she spoke to the little boy for half an hour before she could gain his trust.Besides the Oure Cassoni camp, Jolie has been a visitor at several other camps in Africa, Pakistan, and Cambodia. She travels to devastated areas as part of her work for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees. Jolie is a goodwill ambassador for the UNHCR. For her work, the actress travels alone on commercial flights. Though some have dismissed her efforts as celebrity tourism, Jolie ignores the comments. She has seen over thirty of these refugee camps and wants to return to Cambodia.
