America is Lost in 'Wonderland'
America has gone mad for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. According to Reuters, the 3D adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic broke past records for the biggest opening day sales for any film with a March release date. Wonderland raked in $41 million, taking down the previous champ in 2007’s 300.
While the film looks to reach $100 million by Sunday, critics have predicted that the film will likely reach $75 million by the end of the weekend. If the film does perform that well, its weekend gross will reach numbers similar to the opening of James Cameron’s Avatar.
These domestic receipts also put the Tim Burton film at No. 19 on the list of biggest domestic opening day sales.
Starring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, the highly anticipated film marks the seventh collaboration between the Academy Award nominated actor and the acclaimed director. Although the reviews were mediocre, these receipts prove that the film will likely be one of Burton’s biggest hits.
