American Idiot to Be Made into a Musical

According to MSNBC, punk rock band Green Day is turning their hit album, American Idiot into a musical.

On Monday, the band announced they will be collaborating with Spring Awakening director Michael Mayer to develop the show, which will make its debut at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre.

American Idiot is the story of middle-class citizens who journey from their suburban lives to the city and to the Middle East in search of redemption. Their world is one packed with frustration, according to Reprise Records.

Green Day lead singer Billy Joe Armstrong said of the project, "We are really excited to be working with Michael Mayer on this project. We'd been thinking of bringing 'American Idiot' to the stage, but knew we needed to find the right partners. After meeting with Michael to discuss the possibility, he invited us to see 'Spring Awakening.' We were so impressed with that production, as well as his vision for 'American Idiot,' that we knew we'd found the perfect collaborator."

The show will utilize every song from American Idiot as well as some new songs from the band's forthcoming release, 21st Century Breakdown. The show is slated to run from Sept. 4-Oct. 11.
