'American Idol' Recap: 'Top Four Perform'
The top four American Idol contestants individually failed to impress on Tuesday Night. However, their solo performances stood out.
The celebrity guest judge, Jamie Foxx, helped the contestants in their rendition of songs from the cinema. The actor-singer also had black shirts labeled "Contestant" and "Artist." He said that the best outcome would be if each contestant received both shirts.
Lee DeWyze started off the night with his rendition of "Kiss from the Rose" from Batman Forever. He received a standing ovation from the audience, but the judges weren't as impressed. Kara said that it's one of the most difficult songs and that he had some tune issues. Simon felt that it was on the verge of karaoke.
Next up was Michael Lynche singing "Will You Be There" from Free Willy. The performance started weak but got better as it progressed. The judges again weren't impressed with this rendition, and it didn't help that Simon had no idea what Free Willy was about. Ellen and Kara both felt that it was predictable and that he played it safe.
Lee and Crystal Bowersox provided the first duet of the night. They sang the ballad "Falling Slowly" from the movie Once. The song worked well for both contestants. Randy said that it was a great song by two great singers. Kara said that it was one of her favorite moments of the entire season.
Casey James sang "Mrs. Robinson" from The Graduate. His rendition was soothing and low key. Randy and Simon insinuated that the song was about Kara. The judges had mixed reactions. Ellen liked how he changed the song up, but Simon felt that it was a bit lazy.
Crystal provided the last solo performance of the night, singing "I'm Alright" from Caddyshack. She brought a bluesy edge to the rock song. The judges were impressed. Ellen said that she took the song and made it better. Simon announced that Crystal is back in the game.
Casey and Mike closed the night with their duet. They sang "Have You Ever Loved a Woman" from Don Juan DeMarco. The performance was emotionally powerful, and the judges loved it. Ellen chimed that yes, she has loved a woman. Kara summed up the night saying that the duets were incredible and better than the solo performances.
