American Painter Andrew Wyeth Dies at 91

Andrew Wyeth, one of the best known American painters, died at his home near Philadelphia. He was 91.

It is not clear whether the Christina's World artist died in his sleep Thursday night as reported by Reuters or surrounded by his family Friday morning, according to CNN. Still, the painter will be remembered for his famous landscape paintings of Maine and Pennsylvania.

Wyeth's works, which also included figure objects, were finished mainly in tempera and watercolor. His most popular achievements include a Presidential Freedom Award given to him by President John F. Kennedy and a 2006 exhibition of his works at the Philadelphia Museum that attracted more than 177,000 people, according to Reuters.

"The world has lost one of the greatest artists of all time," said George Weymouth, chairman of the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, a town Wyeth visited frequently for his paintings.

The original painting of Christina's World, his most famous work, can be found at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Wyeth, a Pennsylvania native, is survived by his wife, two sons, and a granddaughter.
