At UFC 117 on Saturday night, Anderson “The Spider” Silva retained his Middleweight Championship over Chael Sonnen. Silva moved his record to 12-0 in the UFC, as he continued to prove why many consider him the greatest pound-for-pound fighter in the world. However, the fight did not come easy. Sonnen took the fight to the ground, and won each of the first four rounds. But with less than two minutes before the fight would be over, and Sonnen would be victorious, Silva caught Sonnen in a triangle choke, and Sonnen was forced to tap out. After months of absurd trash talking from Sonnen, he brought the fight to Silva. Nobody has ever dominated Silva like that, or even come close. Due to the circumstances, a rematch could be in the works.
In the co-main event, Jon Fitch defeated Thiago Alves to be next in line for the Welterweight Championship. Fitch won via decision, which makes it eight straight fights he has had that went to decision. Speaking of titles, Junior Dos Santos defeated Roy Nelson, which will put him next in line for the Heavyweight Championship. Both Fitch and Dos Santos have to watch the respective championship fights to see who their next opponents will be. Matt Hughes and Clay Guida also won their main card fights.
The UFC returns to pay-per-view in less than three weeks when Frankie Edgar defends his newly won Lightweight Championship in a rematch against B.J. Penn. Also on the card, legendary boxer James Toney takes on legendary UFC fighter Randy Couture.
