Andre 3000 Becomes an Animated Cartoon

OutKast member gets his own cartoon character.

Andre Benjamin, better known as "Andre 3000" of the mega popular hip-hop group OutKast, is getting his own cartoon character and series.

According to http://www.boston.com, the Boston Globe web site, "[The] character resembling him [is] named Sunny Bridges, in a cartoon called "Class of 3000." Like Benjamin, Sunny is a wiry music star from Atlanta who can rock a stadium of fans, despite his low-key personality. Unlike Benjamin, though, Sunny drops out of fame and fortune and returns to Atlanta to teach music at a performing-arts school for kids. And that's the premise of "Class of 3000."

"There are true parallels in my real life and Sunny's life," Benjamin said in a recent phone interview.

The show was co-created by Benjamin and is an homage to the "old-school Saturday morning cartoons of the early 1970s." According to http://metromix.chicagotribune.com, the Chicago Tribune's web site, "Benjamin, who voices Sunny and will create a new tune for each episode of the show, has been involved in the series from the get-go -- a creative process that lasted two years."

The show's music will coincide with each episode's plot for total synergy. "Each song has to fit in with the story line, it has to pertain to what the kids are going through, " Benjamin said.

"Originally it was supposed to be [a late night] Adult Swim show, but the more we developed the characters the more it became obvious that 'Class of 3000' would be a better fit earlier in the schedule," Benjamin adds. "I'm glad it went in that direction; we'll reach more people that way." The cartoon premiered on Nov.3 at 8 p.m. on the Cartoon Network.
