Angelina Jolie Photographed with Previously Estranged Father

Following a wave of negative press concerning the state of her relationship with partner Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie is once again making headlines alongside an important man in her life – this time her father.

Earlier today, the Tomb Raider star was photographed with previously estranged father Jon Voight, making their first public appearance together in years.

The two were seen “getting off a taxi boat in Venice, along with Zahara and Brad,” according to TMZ.

The actress, who legally dropped Voight’s name almost a decade ago, has had a tumultuous relationship with her father for most of her life. Despite the extensive roster of issues the two have clashed over throughout the years, Jolie’s animosity towards Voight is reportedly rooted in his treatment of her mother, the late Marcheline Bertrand. Following their divorce shortly after her birth, Jolie and older brother James Haven were raised by their mother in a household financially and emotionally dominated by Voight.

“I have horrible memories of my father and the way he behaved,” Haven told The Daily Mail. “He was so tough on our mother… [Angelina and I] definitely had a taste of his manipulative behavior. But it was when he dealt with my mother that we really saw him pulling the strings.”

Even after a successful reconciliation during the filming of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Voight and Jolie’s relationship remained volatile. During an Access Hollywood interview, Voight stated that his daughter had “serious mental problems,” to which she responded by filing a legal request to change her surname.

However, after a seven-year rift, rumors began circulating in November that Jolie and Voight were attempting to reconnect.

“We’re in touch, but not regularly,” Voight confirmed to Us Weekly after weeks of speculation.

“We love each other and that’s the most important thing.”
