Anna Nicole Smith Case Takes New Turn
The case of Anna Nicole Smith, the late Playboy Playmate, has taken another turn as prosecutors at Broward County State Attorney's Office in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, reexamine it a second time.
In an update from the Sun Sentinel, the online article states that Anna Nicole Smith's boyfriend, Howard K. Stern, along with Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, were taken into custody for plotting to overprescribe drugs for Smith to consume. Stern and Kapoor only spent a little time in Los Angeles County jail after each posted a $20,000 bond. They were later released, last Thursday night. Dr. Khristine Eroshevich also faced conspiracy charges. No word on whether she was actually detained has been made public.
Stern, Kapoor and Eroshevich are facing conspiracy and fraud charges for writing unlawful prescriptions, but have continued to maintain their innocence throughout.
Smith was addicted to prescription medication and her doctors were very well aware, said California Attorney General Jerry Brown. He said Smith was given thousands of pills, which were too excessive, from a follow-up report on CNN.com.
Smith was staying at Hollywood's Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, when, on Feb. 8, 2007, she suddenly collapsed and succumbed in her room. Then, her death was ruled an accidental overdose. Now, as investigators revisit the case in 2009, they discover that 600 pills, counting 450 muscle relaxants, were missing from prescriptions that were no more than five weeks old, according to CBS.
Stern approved all of the bottles without Smith's consent. Smith used 11 prescriptions with some containing opiates and benzodiazepines.
