Anna Nicole Smith Dead One Year

As many still mourn the loss of star Heath Ledger, there are a few who remember that today is the one year anniversary of Anna Nicole Smith's death. It seems odd to think that it's only been a year since the whirlwind life of Smith ended, followed by the whirlwind trials for her body and then for her daughter.

Smith's baby girl, Dannielynn, is now in the custody of her biological father, Larry Birkhead. He told People magazine that there are pictures of Smith and of her son Daniel, who died just days after Dannielynn's birth, all over his house.

"We have a granite piece of tile with Anna's picture on it, and she crawls to it and she kisses it and says, 'Momma!' and she points to her momma. It's sweet, but at the same time, it brings back so many memories," Birkhead explained to People.

Even though the courts have given custody to Birkhead, Smith's mother is trying to gain sole custody of her granddaughter. There are also questions over Daniel's death and other legal problems that Smith left behind.
