Anne Hathaway's Longtime Boyfriend Arrested on Charges of Fraud

Raffaello Follieri reportedly misled investors, stole their money and used it on fancy clothes, nice meals, rent on a lavish apartment and the medical expenses for himself and Hathaway.

Anne Hathaway's former, longtime boyfriend was arrested today on charges of conspiracy, fraud and money laundering, multiple sources report.

Raffaello Follieri, 29, is a wealthy Italian businessman, whose arrest stemmed from a fraudulent real estate plan that he and his company said was linked to the Vatican, U.S. authorities said. He is expected in U.S. District Court in Manhattan later Tuesday.

Follieri is accused of misleading investors by making them believe he had close connections to the Vatican, which would allow him to purchase the Catholic Church's unwanted property in the United States, according to prosecutors and the FBI.

A complaint cited in the lawsuit said that Follieri and others then used the money given to them by the investors on expensive clothes and lavish restaurants, dog-walking services, rent on a $37,000-a-month Manhattan apartment and many medical expenses for himself and Hathaway.

Last week, the Daily Mail reported that the couple had split after dating for four years.
